Twenty people braved the frigid temperature on March 13th to hear & see Dr. Massad's presentation on her time at Al-Quds University in Abu Dis, the West Bank. In between teaching classes and giving public lectures Susan toured the area including Jerusalem and Ramallah. She investigated food distribution including the local agriculture and water sources. As this area is under occupation and in Area C (no public services), life is difficult but because people are used to it and seem to take it in stride. She noted that they have not lost their kindness, sense of humor or joie de vie. After a question and answer period we discussed pending legislation in Congress related to boosting military aide to Israel. Seven people signed a letter to Sen. Markey objecting to S. 462 and 2 signed a letter to Sen. Warren on the same subject. Addresses were provided to Rep. Clark and Kennedy who voted for the similar house bill H. 938 and many people said they would write their own letters. We hope that our elected officials begin to hear from more of us: that our interest in the Middle East is the welfare and peace of all the people, not the qualitative edge of military might in Israel. Real peace would include a just society where everyone could get to their fields, have drinkable water, have trash disposal and move freely.
